2013 Races

Here is a rundown of my 2013 races. A mileage update will come soon.

Franklin Classic 10K and 5K

Val, me, and Catherine before the 5K
Friday or Saturday night, race director (and my Team Belladium teammate) Kat texted a few of us from the team and asked whether we'd like to race the Franklin Classic race her company was putting on for Labor Day. Although I would be just a week off of Ironman and I had done NOTHING for that entire week, I couldn't pass up the chance to race :-)

Val, Anna, me, and Cath after the 5K
Monday morning, I headed downtown early to register and run the first race, the 10K. I have my 10K race PR (46:36) from the Franklin Classic in 2009, and I also raced in 2010 (48:32). This year was a much different course, though, and I was in no condition to PR after Ironman, hence the 50:41 (8:11 pace).

10K course: 50:41
As you can see, it's pretty hilly. But they're all familiar roads, so I just wanted to have some fun. I started out somewhere in the middle of the pack and ended up in pretty much the same place.

I finished at 10 to 8 and the 5K started at 8:45, so I had almost an hour in between races. I had a little eat and drink, and then went back to my car to change shirts (it was hot and muggy already!) before meeting up with Valerie, Anna, and Catherine for the 5K. Again, we started pretty much in the middle of the (seemingly much larger) group and moved our way up a little. I tried to keep this right around an 8:30 pace, and somehow despite the slower pace it hurt more than the 10K!

5K course: 26:21
Cath, me, Val, and Kat after both races and after breakfast
After the races, I picked up a lady walking her bike and took her home. I've been trying to be aware of other people and what they might need, and any cyclist walking a bike is a big blip on my radar. I was driving home from Catherine's house and saw this lady walking her bike that had a flat tire. I had a pump but no tubes, so naturally I offered to take her home. She had a volunteer shirt on from the race and I had raced, so we had a connection and she wasn't a complete stranger. She'd said she was walking maybe half a mile, but I insisted her bike would fit and it wouldn't be an imposition for me to drive her. I didn't have to persuade long, and I found out she had two stress fractures on her foot and had very recently (like the last day or two) been cleared to bike without her boot. It ended up being nearly a 2-mile drive, so she would have been walking too long for her nearly broken foot. I was super happy to help :-)

Firecracker 5K

Start line...rain, rain, rain!

Today was the annual July 4th Andrews Cadillac Firecracker 5K in Maryland Farms. It is one of my favorite races because it is practically in my backyard--it starts at the MFY and goes on roads I ride or run on quite frequently, so I know the course well.

It was raining this morning, but that didn't stop over 700 participants from running. After last night's race and because of my lack of running lately, I was hoping for around 24 minutes and somewhere in the top half of my age group. When I looked at the results I was completely surprised: 23:26 and 4th of 55 in my AG! I definitely started out fast and slowed down slightly, but I think if I'd have started at the pace I ended at I wouldn't have ended any faster, so faster at the start is better for me! As soon as I finished, I walked 2 minutes and then did the entire course again, adding a few miles at the end to complete 7 miles in just under an hour. Still have a little work to do with speed and endurance, but it was a good run and I really enjoyed it!

Oh, boy!

Pictures are from here. I got tons of comments about my socks (red and white striped tall compression ones) and the flowered lei I was wearing. This picture is from about 10 seconds after the start. I was thinking, What is this camera person doing in the middle of the road?!? He's going to get run over! Maybe I should have been enjoying the race like the lady next to me was.

It was about 68* and raining the entire race, and the temperature was perfect.

Garmin Stats: 3.14 miles, 23:22, 7:27 pace. Mile 1: 7:07; Mile 2: 7:27; Mile 3: 7:50; Mile 3.14: 00:57
Rest of run stats: 4.09 miles, 26:00, 8:48 pace. Mi 1: 9:03; Mi 2: 8:10; Mi 3: 8:45; Mi 4: 9:14; Mi 4.09: 00:47
(I walked through a water stop at Mi 3 and up a hill at Mi 4.)

Girls on the Run 5K and TN State TT Recaps

Team post-race -- Amanda, Kiki, Anna, Shelly, Kailin, Cali

It was a rainy weekend. Saturday was the Girls on the Run 5K; Kaiya and I ran a 26:35, almost 5 minutes faster than our practice 5K a couple weeks ago (April 8; 31:15).

Girls on the run 5K -- Kaiya and me

Then, after I got a ton of stuff done at my house, we headed to Chattanooga. We pre-rode the TT course, had a good dinner, and tried to sleep.

Sunday was another cold, rainy day, but we set out to do our thing: 30K on the TT bikes. My time was 55:22, good enough for 5th place in the P/1/2 field. It was a strong field, and I am happy with top 5! My girls obviously did well too, as you can see in the pictures!

Cat 3 podium -- Anna in 3rd

Cat 4 podium -- Kiki in 2nd

Masters podium -- Cali in 1st

Merckx women podium -- Shelly in 1st

P/1/2 podium -- Amanda in 3rd

Girls on the Run Nashville Practice 5K

With the Percy Priest Elementary School Girls on the Run team at Shelby Park

One new thing I decided to get involved with this year is Girls on the Run. My role is "running buddy," which means I run a practice 5K and a 5K race with an elementary-school-aged girl who has been training with a few of her classmates and coaches.

Today was our practice 5K, so I met everyone for the first time, including my runner Kaya. We practiced on  what will be the race course at Shelby Park, and it was (sparsely) marked with pink arrows. Evidently pink is the color for this crew!

Kaya and I started at the front, and she said she didn't need to be the first to finish because she had basketball practice after this. We still stayed second, within sight of the first girl. When a third girl was getting close enough that we could hear her talking to her buddy, I asked Kaya what she wanted to do (because at that point, we were walking): Did she want to stay ahead of this girl, let her catch us, or what. She said she just wanted to finish the run. And finish we did, still in second place.

Our overall time was around 31:15, and we walked two or three times. Shelby Park is beautiful, and we enjoyed the trail, the pond, the fishermen, the duck houses, and the statues. I hope she enjoyed the run (and made it through bball practice OK!). Her mom said Kaya hoped her teammates made their lay-ups, because if they didn't they'd have to run.

The temps were in the mid to high 70s, one of the warmest days for these girls to run. Most knew their previous best times (I think all but 1 of the 15 had done at least one 5K), and their times today were around 2 minutes slower than that. Most of us ran with water bottles as well, just in case, but there was a water stop at the halfway point also.

I LOVED this. Kaya is a great runner and seemed to enjoy it, even though bball is her favorite sport and the sport the family knows best, according to her mom. I tried to let her set the pace, staying beside her but encouraging her to step in behind me when we hit some headwind.

Now I can't wait for the actual race on May 4 to see how well she and all the other girls do!

Franklin Jingle Bell 5K

Catherine, Madi, and me at the square before the race

Tuesday I went on a nice long hike with Kat.

Wednesday I rode my bike at Todd's, worked, and trained in the afternoon.

Thursday I worked, trained and went on the step mill, ran into Anna M and chatted, made some new friends at closing time at the bank, and went to Inversion.

Friday I met Anna S and Catherine at Pinkerton Park, where we walked a mile, ran 3, chatted while watching Madison play, and ran another 2.

Saturday I ran the Franklin Jingle Bell 5K with Catherine in 22:56. Not quite as fast as I was hoping for, but good enough for 3rd in my age group, 14th overall female, and 51st overall (396 finishers; 237 females). I ran a bunch of errands and cleaned, then after church I ran another 2 miles. It was an unpleasant run, and I stopped long before I'd planned to.

Kathy, Kat, and Shannon after their race

Today I got up and went for a walk, swam 1,000 at the MFY and then headed out to Gallatin to watch my teammates Anna, Kat, and Shannon (among others) race a cyclo-cross race. Val, Anna, and I also rode while we were out there, and it was a gorgeous day. Then I went home and went for a walk because I didn't want to stay inside!

After the Turkey Trot race with Mom
The Bethlehem Turkey Trot was fun and I ran a 22:28. It was a hilly, cold race, but I raced well and was happy with my time. I was 12th in my 20-29 AG of 223 people and 106 of 1,183 participants.

Josh Byers 5K Memorial Day Run Race Report

Kat and me post-race
Kat (my teammate) was the race director for a local 5K (at D1, basically in my backyard; I could ride my bike there in as much time as it would've taken me to drive and park!) that I ran today. The last 5K I race was the Fangtastic 5K back in February, and I really haven't been running much at all. I've been on the elliptical and step mill, but not outside and not on the tready. So I didn't know how I'd do today and what time I'd finish in. I pretty much just ran for fun, paced off a couple people, passed two in the finishing chute (the girl looked like she was in my AG, so I had to beat her; turns out she is 30 but I didn't know that so I still beat her), and ended up beating my time from the Fangtastic 5K, winning my age group, and winning a prize for the best patriotic costume. It was a good day!

The back

The front
The outfit project was super fun. Lauren helped me cut all the stars and lay them out, then I sewed them all on. There are 29, one for each of my years and they all have names. Each one is a person who has influenced me throughout my life, and I was running today in honor of them and their influence. It took me a long time to sew them all but it was so worth it.

I did the Fangtastic 5K in 22:53, my first time under 23 since 2009. I did this race in 22:48, and even better time than in February and I am thrilled! I think I was the 7th female overall, but when I see official results I'll post them.

Since this race was at D1, I went inside and asked whether I could use the glute ham stand. Will would be so proud.

Predators Fangtastic 5K

Bib number and my Garmin

This is one of my absolutely favorite races around town. You pay the same price as you would for any other 5K ($35, which is absolutely ridiculously expensive for a 5K) and get a t-shirt (that's always one I'll wear), a voucher for a ticket to a Predators game of your choosing (from the 3 available dates), bagels and fruit from Whole Foods, and today a $25 discount for AdventureWorks and coupons for Whole Foods and other things. It is worth the money for me for the $30 Preds ticket I get out of it; everything else is a fantastic extra.

They changed the course this year, and I really had no idea what to expect time-wise. I thought it would be slightly harder and thus slower, but for me it definitely was not. Hooray! I ran my fastest time in this race by almost 20 seconds, and that is with absolutely no specific speed training; 2010 is probably the year I was most specifically training because Will was here to train me from November–January, and today's time beat that time. Plus I haven't been under 23 minutes since the middle of 2009, which means it's been almost 3 years And I ran pretty consistent, too. Here are my times from previous years compared to this year:

2-04-12: 22:53
2-12-11: 23:27
2-06-10: 23:12
2-14-09: 23:49

Also, it turns out that when I run pretty consistent mile times, I finish well overall and in my age group. Today I was the 16th female of 732 finishers and though the preliminary results list said I finished 5th in my AG, I got a medal for 3rd of 149 because the first two were overall winners; I'm glad I stuck around! This is my first time placing in my AG in this race, and I got a sweet hockey puck medal.

Sweet medal!

Here is the route:

I ended up running a bit before and a bit after the race to get 6.5 miles. I was supposed to run 45 minutes today, so I wanted to get that in all at one time. I headed up Demonbreun again, against the finishing runners but out of there way, and then ran back down with the 4X:xx finishers. It's a whole different world at the back of a race—lots more conversation and walking!

Here are my race stats and my HR data: 3.17 miles, 22:53 (7:23 pace; 5:42 best), ~180 bpm (196 max), 657' ascent, 982' descent.

Here's the data from the 5 miles that included the race and from the 1.25 miles before that; I didn't record the final 0.25 to get me to 6.5 because I was freezing and didn't want to turn my Garmin back on:

5 miles, 42:41, 8:32 pace, 174 bpm (197 max), 1488' ascent, 1734' descent
Mile 1: 7:11
Mile 2: 7:27
Mile 3: 7:10
Mile 3.17: 1:04 (6:27 pace)
Mile 4.17: 11:50
Mile 5: 6:25 (8:36 pace)
1.25 mile warmup: 15:18, 12:11 pace, 93 bpm, 1569; ascent, 1191' descent

Comparison notes:
2012: 1465 finishers (732 females and 733 males); 3/149 in AG; 16/732 females; 97/1465 overall.
2011: 946 finishers (515 females and 431 males); 4/115 in AG; 16/515 females; 79/946 overall.
2010: 1206 finishers (660 females and 546 males); 3/174 in AG; 14/660 females; 86/1,206 overall.
2009: 1504 finishers (782 females and 722 males); 3/185 in AG, 39/782 females; 161/1,504 overall.

Firecracker 5K

If I would have registered for the Maryland Farms Firecracker 5K, I would have done pretty good in my AG (4th of 56). But alas, I just ran and thus have no official results. But it was fun nonetheless! Results are here. I got in a decent warmup by riding to the Y, but there really was no need for warmup given the humidity. And I found out that I can still pull out a little bit of speed (for me, that is) even with so little running: Mile 1 was 7:11 and Mile 2 was 7:18. My finish time was 22:06, just 54 seconds off my PR (which was on that course 2 years ago). And I beat my time from last year and was faster than in my only other 5K this year (Fangtastic 5K), so it was a good morning.

After spending some time at Farkases', I went to Crockett Park to listen to some live music and watch the fireworks. There were way more people there than I'd expected, but it was a blast. I enjoyed the music, read a couple chapters in my book, and was able to relax. Happy holiday!

Predators Fangtastic 5K

The start..complete with Gnash and the Purity chocolate milk bottle

I always look so uncomfortable when I run...

The Predators Fangtastic 5K is one of my favorite races. Not because of the course, because it's pretty hilly; not because of the time of year, because it's usually chilly; but because with your race entry fee, you get a ticket to a Predators game! I don't go to many during the year (typically only this one, actually), but I really enjoy watching hockey games, and this is an excuse to go to a game. Last year, Will went to the game with me, and that was more fun than being solo, especially since he knows hockey so well and could explain things to me that I didn't get or didn't know.
  • Total time: 23:27
Race notes from this year: There were 946 finishers (431 males, 515 females); I was 4th in my AG of 115. I was 16th of the 515 females. I was 79th of the 946 finishers. In 2010, I was 3/174 AG, 14/660 females, 86/1,206 OA. In 2009, I was 3/185 AG, 39/782 females, 161/1,504 OA.

Immediately after finishing and grabbing a bagel, water, and some fruit, I headed back to Franklin for the last of the Resolution Bootcamp sessions at D1 Nashville. Ryan was our coach today, and he worked us a bit harder than Sarah had because we did one round of the stations for reps rather than doing all rounds for time only. We had a smaller group today so it worked well, and part of the group today was Brad and Rebecca, who were on my Fellowship Softball team. It was fun to know and work with other people!

Fellowship Softball Co-Ed Team Back row: Herb, Greg, Brandon, Lindsey, Michele, Brad;
Front row: Kevin, Tara, Jeff, (not sure), Rebecca

We started with a warmup lap with stairs, which I missed because I was a minute late. Then, after a dynamic warmup, with did stations for a minute, abs, stations for 10 reps or 2 times through (based on the station), then abs again. Then we did 3 times 20-yard lunge, 30-yard sprint, 50-yard jog. The stations were feet agility,  kettle bell swings, log lifts (15lb), sprints/push ups, punching bag/burpies, oblique abs (8lb med ball), shoulder press (15lb each), curl (25lb), row (15–25lb), tire/hammer, push up/row (15–20lb). I really enjoyed the good workout.

Lauren and Rachel at the mall

Right after that, I went to pick up Lauren and Rachel from Rachel's house. Then we hung out for the rest of the day, eating lunch at McDougals, stopping at the pet store to play with the rabbits, shopping at the mall so Lauren could spend her birthday gift cards, and painting a mug (Rachel) and bowl (Lauren) at Third Coast Clay. It was a great afternoon, and I had a blast with the girls!

Go Pack!

Thanksgiving Vacation

The fam (minus Mike)

After working and traveling yesterday. I made it to Orefield, PA, to celebrate Thanksgiving with my parents, sisters, one brother-in-law, Robin's in-laws, and another of Jason and Robin's friends. Thursday morning, Mom, Dad, Rich, Gretchen (the in-laws), and I went to Nazareth to run a 5K Turkey Trot. It wasn't my fastest run, but it was right around where I've been running lately so I was pleased that I haven't lost any fitness. My time was 24:02, but the race wasn't chip-timed so I might not even include those stats. Here are the results, PDF. I'm pretty sure I was 6th in my age of I don't know how many, 24:10 on the clock.

Mom and Dad finished

I did find a few more-readable results: 6 of 43 AG; 50 of 361 females; 173 of 706 total finishers.

After the race, we all headed back to Robin's, had a great meal, played some fun games, and enjoyed the afternoon.

Thanksgiving dinner

Friday morning, we had to take Michelle to the airport early so Mom, Robin, and I went to see what kind of sales there were. We all found a couple little things, but we sure weren't the black Friday shoppers most retailers hope for.

Bye, Michelle!

Dad and I worked out a little later: 10-10-10 EDI, 3 sets: standing ham, lunge, wall push up, and curl (8lb). We skipped wall squat and crate crunch.

Training with Dad

More turkey for lunch, a nice long walk, time to relax in the hot tub, dinner, and more games were on tap for the rest of the afternoon.

Oh, yeah—it snowed here, too!
