NashVegas Triathlon

Before the swim

Today was so much fun. Last year I’d volunteered at the NashVegas Triathlon and got a free entry, so Anna and I decided to do the Olympic distance as a relay team. She was going to do the swim and run, and I was going to do the bike and possibly run with her (with her wearing the timing chip).

Our distance started at 7:45, and the female wave went off just before 8, so once Anna started I had about 25 minutes to wait. I grabbed my stuff that I’d previously put in transition and ran it up to my car; it was starting to rain, and I wanted it to stay mostly dry. Although I knew I’d get wet as soon as I started to ride, I waited under a tent just outside of the transition area and watched for her to run up. I jumped on my bike and started the 24-mile ride in the rain. It rained nearly the entire time, but I could see that the sky was beginning to clear and hoped that it might be dry for the run.

The bike course was great. We had a 5-mile-or-so out-and-back section on a highway and then turned off into the country. There was about a 1-mile climb and a lot more up-and-down throughout the entire course. I got passed by a few and passed many more, including the dozen or so I passed within the first mile.

Finishing the bike leg

By the time I returned to transition (actually, before I even left transition), I was a soaking wet mess but feeling good. I passed the chip to Anna and stopped to chat with Valerie for a second. I caught up to Anna but wasn’t able to keep her pace, so I just ran behind her.

Anna running strong...and it was dry!

When she turned around I did too, thus the run distance being shorter than 10K. Surprisingly, my run was much faster than I expected and I felt much better than I expected—thus the pleasantness of the race in general.

After the race...dry and happy!

It did end up clearing up and we had a fairly dry run, and the sun came out while they gave out the awards. Anna and I finished in 2:32:32, 2nd in our division (Female Relay).

Race number, t-shirt, medal, and results
We also won a door prize (socks, Body Glide, and more)

Swim: 29:38
T1: 00:47
Bike: 1:12:48, 24.21 miles, 20.1 mph (39.0 max), 172 bpm
T2: 01:10
Run: 48:09, 5.92 miles, 8:16 pace, 174 bpm (M1 – 7:36; M2 – 8:14; M3 – 8:41 turnaround; M4 – 8:07; M5 – 8:42 walked up the hill to stay behind Anna; M5.92 – 7:32, 8:12 pace)

Anna, Val, and I chilled for a while after the race. We all knew quite a few people there and chatted a bit. Then I came home for a nap!

Honestly, this was probably the most fun I’ve had at a triathlon. Granted it’s been a year since I’ve raced one so maybe my memory’s a little off, but because there wasn’t a lot of pressure I was able to just enjoy it.

Friday night Lauren, Bennett, Aunt Renee, Uncle John, and I went to see Much Ado about Nothing at Centennial Park, and we also went to a Greek Festival beforehand for dinner.

Rev3 Knoxville Oly Tri

What I was least looking forward to...

Today’s was my one and only tri of the season, so I wanted to make it the best one. I drove over to Knoxville yesterday and did all the pre-race stuff: Pick up my packet, attend the athlete briefing, rack my bike, check out what I can of the course without driving, mentally prepare, pray about the race, and chat with people who are around. I made it just in time for the second of 2 athlete briefings and after listening to them discuss the course and race realized that I’d forgotten my wetsuit. It was supposed to be in the 60s in the morning, and the water temperature was currently about 65°—Brrr! I was prepared for the cold weather but not the cold water. Oh, well, I’d deal with it in the morning. I headed over to the Giles’ house, where I was staying for the night, played some baseball and watched part of a movie with Leah and Michael, and was asleep before 10. That wasn’t as early as I would’ve liked, but I could also sleep in in the morning compared to my normal weekday routine.

I was out of the house by 6am after a breakfast of water and oatmeal with brown sugar and honey and all set up before Transition closed at 7am. I missed the start from the start point but was doing at the swim finish to watch the pros get out of the water and on to the bike. That was fun to see, but of course I didn’t have my camera and don’t have pictures. My start time was 8:02, with all the other Olympic-distance-racing women, the latest start time of the day. I got in the water around 8:01 after having debated with myself for the previous 30 minutes whether to even start the race. I knew I had enough to keep my warm once I was out of the water, but I didn’t want to freeze in the water and not finish the swim. So I made a deal with myself: If I saw at least 5 people without wetsuits (I watched nearly everyone else start), I would start the race. By 7:55, I’d seen only 2 guys, not the 5 I’d needed. But I walked to the dock anyway, and there I saw a women and her daughter, both without wetsuits. I went to chat with them, and they convinced me to start, stating that we were basically already committed anyway and pointing to a girl behind me who had on only a swimsuit—the 5th person I needed to see. So I jumped in. This swim was probably my slowest.swim.ever at (on my watch) 32 minutes. Unfortunately, that’s pretty close to my half-distance swim with a wetsuit. But given that I was without a wetsuit and hadn’t been swimming much, I didn’t let the time phase me.

Finished with the swim, finally!

I’d learned from last year’s Music City Tri that everyone else might have just as slow (or slower) a swim as I had, so I went into transition ready to ride hard and fast.

What I was most looking forward to...

My transition was pretty long (for me) because I took the time to change from the shirt I swam in to my Team Belladium fleece jersey, completely dry my feet and put on nice wool socks, and cover my shoes with my booties (they were already on, but I had to pull them up and zip them). I did not regret that decision at all. Though I warmed up on the bike, I was never hot, so I was comfortably dressed. The best part of this ride was that I passed so many people on the bike. I actually looked forward to every hill. I know from my past years of racing that triathletes are great on flats and not as strong on hills. Roadies are much better on hills, and since becoming a roadie I’ve become better on hills. That skill was definitely my advantage today and I passed more people than I could count. I passed a number of women in my age group as well, moving from 11/15 out of the swim up to 4/15 after the ride.

The excitement for the ride was watching some guy hit a car. He’d been riding on the car’s bumper because he wanted to pass but the car was not moving to one side or the other and the rider didn’t know which side to pass on. He shouldn’t have been right at the bumper regardless, but he was, and the driver hit the brakes. Car stopped, rider hit bumper, rider braked, rider fell. I looked at the car’s license plate and memorized it but figured there wouldn’t be much opportunity for me to actually share it with anyone. About a mile or so later (measuring mileage on the bike in a race is not my strong point), we passed an officer in his car protecting an intersection for us. I told him, “There was a rider down near the corner of Stout and Tipton Ridge!” and kept riding. Even while I was paying attention to all this, I was moving up in the field and continuing to race (a huge improvement over last year, when I finished the bike thinking I didn’t really race it at all). Another mile or so later, said rider passed me again (and I saw him again on the run), so thankfully he was OK.

I knew the photographer was here, so I'm trying to smile. But I didn't adjust my stride for him at all, and this is a much better looking step than I've had in similar pictures in the past. Hooray!

T2 was much quicker than T1 as I took off my fleece jersey, grabbed a visor, put on my tennies, and headed out. I remember the course from last year (did not remember any of the bike course) and also pretended like I was running around the big block at the MFY. It worked well, I ran the whole thing, and I didn’t allow myself to be passed by too many people. I passed only a few, but it was still a success (given my lack of run training). Around mile 3, a girl from my age group passed me. I had no more speed than what I was giving, so I had no chance of staying with her. I tried and couldn’t, so I let her go and just kept racing my race. Less than a mile from the finish, I passed a girl in my age group and encouraged her to keep it up, secretly hoping she was too tired to keep up with me. She was, and I beat her. So I maintained my 4th place position during the run and ended up 4/15 in my age group. Hooray! This is way better than last year’s 16th place finish!

  • Totals: 2:46:05 (slower than last year, thanks to a ridiculously slow swim). 4/15 in Age Group. 41/159 females. 230/506 overall.
  • Swim: 33:53
  • T1: 3:47
  • Bike: 1:15:06, 24.8 miles, 19.8 mph (35.1 max), 175 HR (189 max)
  • T2: 0:57 (much better than T1, but T1 also included the run up from the swim)
  • Run: 52:21. Mi 1: 8:04. Mi 2: 8:14. Mi 3: 8:20. Mi 4+bathroom: 8:28. Mi 5: 8:35. Mi 6: 8:29. Mi 6.23: 1:51. 8:25 pace.

The winner of our AG finished in 2:11:53. The first swimmer in AG (same girl) did 24:47, the first cyclist (same girl) did 1:04:56, and the first runner (same girl) did 39:19. Her transitions were 1:55 and 0:54. The first overall female finished in 2:03:00. She swam in 16:44, rode in 1:06:30, and ran in 37:45. My last year's times were the following: Total: 2:41:01. Swim: 23:47. T1: 2:10. Bike: 1:21:59. T2: 2:10. Run: 50:53.

I had a great time and am very happy with how I raced, how I felt, and how I finished. Success! Full results are here.

Fall Creek Falls Olympic

Running up one of the many hills

Pre-race sunrise; though the flash went off and you can see my Team B t-shirt, you can also see the sunrise in the background—it's actually a pretty cool pic!

Today's race was great. I don't have much time to write today, but hopefully I'll finish a race report soon. In the meantime, here are the highlights:
  • The best thing I heard before the race: "Race for Jesus!" It was from a man talking to someone else, but I decided it should be what I focused on.
  • I swam well and knew I was in the top 10 coming out of the swim when I got out and heard, "Top 10, Baby!" from a man to his SO. But I knew if she was, I was too (at least in my wave)! Plus I could see 6 women ahead of me and one beside during our 400-meter run up to transition, so I knew I was close. I passed a couple of them in transition and at least 2 on the bike.
  • I rode super well knowing how close I was to the front. Didn't see the first man (who would have started up to 9 minutes before me) until my mile 9 (his mile 15) on the bike and the first woman (Tammy, with Lynn close behind) until my mile 11 or 11.5 (their mile 12.5 or 13).

  • Out on the bike

  • I actually ran down a girl on the run, but also got run down by a couple.
  • My final time was 2:31:10, I was second in my AG, and 10th overall female. Woohoo!
In previous races, I had the following times:
  • Knoxville (5-9-10): 2:41:01, 8 of 16 (AG), 39 of 107 (females), 164 of 359 (OA)
    female winner: 2:03:48
  • Memphis (5-23-10): 2:35:49, 25 of 56 (AG), 92 of 388 (females), 395 of 1,119 (OA)
    female winner: 2:05:55
  • Quassy (6-05-10): 2:53:05, 6 of 25 (AG), 23 of 134 (females), 112 of 375 (OA)
    female winner: 2:27:58
  • Chattanooga (7-12-10): 2:41:26, 13 of 66 (AG), 57 of 406 (females), x of 1,234 (OA)
female winner: 2:13:41; AG winner: 2:28:57
  • Nashville (7-25-10): 3:09:12, 11 of 28 (AG), x of xx (females), x of xx (OA)
female winner: 2:14:22; AG winner: 2:34:33
Shows you some of the hills in the area; if I remember right, we rode this road as part of our out-and-back bike route.

OK, here are the official results:
  • 75/309 overall
3/12 in AG (I ended up with the second-place award because the other girl was in the Athena category)
    11/98 females
  • Swim: 22:21 (96th OA; 19th female, 10th in my wave)
  • T1: 3:58 (71st OA; 19th female)
  • Bike: 1:12:13 (77th OA; 11th female)
  • T2: 1:04 (T-94th OA; T-28th female)
  • Run: 51:36 (75 OA; 18th female)
  • Total: 2:31:10 (75th OA; 1th female)
Finished! I try to stop my watch after I've finished so it's not in the picture, but evidently I was too early on this one.

Music City Triathlon and NashvilleCyclist.com Crit

Michael C and me at the finish—his wife was at the finish to catch both of us :-)
I almost don't want to recap this weekend because it was so brutal and I did not end up with the results I wanted, but I have pictures and want to share them!

Saturday was a 40-minute crit put on by NashvilleCyclist.com. I ended up in 7th place behind a breakaway of 3 and 3 others I couldn't out-sprint because my legs died. But I did win one sprint and a cash prime, so all was not lost.

Me, Laura, Valerie, Marsha, Shelly

Jessica, Marsha, Olga, me, Lisa C, Laura, Valerie, Lisa S, Cali
Sunday was an Olympic-distance tri put on by Team-Magic, the Music City Triathlon. The swim was brutal, keeping me in the water 10+ minutes longer than I should have been in there. It all went downhill from there, with me not being able to get my HR down and probably not regulating my body heat well. I drank at least 32 ounces (water) before the race, at least 64oz (water, gatorade) during the race (not including any river water I might have consumed), and up to 200 oz (water, gatorade, recovery drink) during the rest of the afternoon, but I still didn't feel totally quenched. And that was after having up to 132 oz (water, gatorade, recovery drink) after 1pm on Saturday. Yikes! Needless to say, it's been HOT here!

I loved being able to race with Team B on Saturday, and loved that a few of them were out there on Sunday to cheer us on. It definitely helped with my motivation, and I was glad that Lisa and Lisa were there at the finish and especially glad that neither had to accompany me to the med tent (tho I know Lisa S would have); thankfully after I spent a few minutes in the shade I felt well enough to watch them all crush the crit in just has hot or hotter weather. The asphalt and open parking lot are completely unforgiving.

Finished with the swim, finally!

Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon

This was the 4th Olympic-distance triathlon I've done this year, after Knoxville, Memphis, and Quassy. Today's times are pretty comparable (as in, little improvement) to those races.
Today's time was good enough for 13th in my age group of 66. Not quite the 5th place or higher that I was hoping for, but I felt like I raced well and went about as fast as I could on that course.

Stats from the watch and the Garmin (full results and stats to come):
  • Swim: 25:41 (I thought my time was about 23 minutes); T1: 2:33
  • Bike: 1:22:01 (watch); 1:20:22 (Garmin), 1:14:54 (results); 25.84 mi, 19.3 avg (40.1 max), 1,676 cal, 160 HR (187 max); T2: 4:57
  • Run: 53:21; 8:31, 8:29, 8:15, 8:27, 8:36, 9:25, 1:38
  • Swim: 23 of 68; fastest was 20:37; T1: 20 of 68; fastest was 1:46
  • Bike: 3 of 68; fastest was 1:12:47 (Mindy)
  • Run: 17 of 68; fastest of 43:44
  • Fastest bike for females was 1:07:41; I was 19 of 406 for bike time!

Quassy Rev3 Triathlon

Race report to come. Or maybe not.

Total time: 2:53:05 (2:52:34 on my watch). Super slow. Ugh.
  • Swim: 28:37 (27:43 on my watch)
  • T1: 2:05
  • Bike: 1:27:22 (1:28:10 on my watch)
  • T2: 1:10
  • Run: 53:51 (54:19 on my watch)
I was 6 of 25 in age group, 23 of 134 females, and 112 of 375 overall. Definitely a super slow time, but everyone was slow; the first male finished in 2:09:12, and the first female finished in 2:27:58 (splits: 24:06 swim, 1:15:46 bike, 44:58 run). For my AG rankings, I was 9th of the swim, 7th off the bike, and 8th after the run, but it was enough for 6th in age.

Memphis in May Olympic

Not the results I was looking for, but I definitely raced well, did well, felt good, and am happy. I really tried to pus my pace on the bike and tried for the fastest bike split in my AG. I ended up 18. Two unforeseen circumstances lengthened my time slightly:
  1. Around mile 10, my Garmin fell off my bike. If you've been reading this for any length of time you know I heavily rely on that watch for all my stats. It's a fabulous tool. I couldn't let it be lost, so I turned around to pick it back up. The 3 people I'd just passed passed me, but I turned around and passed them back again!
  2. Around mile 19 or 20, a fire truck and an ambulance with their lights on were coming toward me (in the opposite lane, of course). Thought #1: What do I do on a bike?? Thought #2: Maybe they'll keep going and I won't have to worry. Realization #1: They were turning into the parking lot I was nearing. Action #1: Slow down, basically stop, to let them into the parking lot. Realization #2: Someone's bike was down, I didn't see the athlete, and I hoped they were OK. Then I continued.
Those 2 events likely added at least a minute to my time. If I'd have been at 1:06:30 instead of my 1:07:48, I would have been ranked 15th of the 56 in my AG (69 were preregistered). If I'd have finished in 59 minutes, I would have been first. Still, after having to slow down like I did, I was less than 8 minutes off the fastest bike split.

The run wasn't nearly as good. I gave so much on the bike that I felt like I didn't have much on the run. I finished under 60 minutes; that's nothing special. In fact, it's probably my slowest 10K yet. But I finished. I ended up 25 of 56 in my age group, and 95 of 339 female finishers. There were 731 male finishers, which means 1,119 total finishers (395 of 1,119 if my calculations are correct).

For the amateur challenge, where they paid out the top 15 age groupers, I was 23rd of 40 entrants. Again, not where I wanted to be, but I don't regret the way I raced either today or yesterday. I came out to crush the bike, and I felt like I did my best on both days. I raced, was competitive, enjoyed it, and overall am very pleased.
  1. Swim rank, time: 31 25:59
  2. T1: 1:40
  3. Bike rank, time, pace: 18 1:07:48 20.8
  4. T2: 1:24
  5. Run rank, time, pace: 28 59:09 9:32
  6. Finish time: 2:35:57
Sometimes I wish I were still in the 20–24 AG—there were only 6 entrants, and I would have placed second with my time!

Knoxville Rev3

Anna and me at the finish
The first race of the season was today. It went OK for me—I swam well, biked well, ran well for the first 2 miles and OK for the last 4. I have no idea what my final time was. The website says 2:41 but according to my watch the bike leg is at least 10 minutes off. I am not impressed with the timing and results from this race. I froze during the bike and run. My feet didn't warm up until mile 4 of the run and I kept my arm warmers on the entire race. I raced exactly as I'd trained, which is a good indication that my training is preparing me to race but also shows that I could be training faster and would probably race faster. We'll try again in 2 weeks and see whether I've improved between now and then.

Ready to go!

Swim start; it took me forever to get in the water (that's me in the yellow cap; somehow 3 of us in the wave got the wrong color caps), but once I was in it felt warm.

My bike rack, name and everything. Sweet.

First 3 miles of the bike out of Knoxville were super hilly!

Here are the results from the website; they might actually be right, now that I look at them closer:
  • 2:41:01, 39 of 107 females, 8 of 16 in age, 164 of 359 finishers
  • 23:47 swim
  • 2:10 T1
  • 1:21:59 ride
  • 2:10 T2
  • 50:53 run
The winner of our AG finished in 2:18:28. The first swimmer in AG (same girl) did 18:32, the first cyclist (same girl) did 1:14:30, and the first runner (same girl) did 41:30. Her transitions were 2:05 and 1:32. The first overall female finished in 2:03:48. She swam in 16:44, rode in 1:06:30, and ran in 37:45.

Garmin stats:
  • 2:14:44 bike, T2, run, 31.91 miles, 167 HR, 2398 cal
  • 1:22:29 bike (25.63 mi), 18.6 avg (36.3 max), 1663 cal, 169 HR (184 max)
  • 49:55 run (6.13 miles), 8:09 pace (5:06 best), 735 cal, 167 HR (180 max)

Olympic-Distance and Half-Iron Distance Training Programs

The first 16 weeks are ready for me to start training. Here is the majority of the training schedule.

16-Week Olympic-Distance Triathlon Training Program
(From "Essential Week-By-Week Training Guide," Fitzgerald)

I plan to work in 3 days of isos with the option for a 4th if I'm so inclined. We'll see how it goes, but I've really missed it this week (although not enough to have called Will and asked for workouts!).

The next 20 weeks, with some overlap, are also ready. It's been a productive weekend!

Off to sleep then on to work tomorrow.

Anthracite Olympic and Jim Thorpe

Age group awards: coal! (We were in mining country, hence the name Anthracite Triathlon)

The swim start (sorta--I had to take this before I walked down there)

Checking out the results...2 of 7 in age, 7 of 30-something in gender, 2:42 total time

Tearing down my transition area

Playing a little football with Jason while we waited for the awards...yes, I do get cold after races

Multisport time: 2:10:49
Multisport distance: 30.41
Average HR: 173
Total calories: 2,468

1:20:35 total bike time (that seems short for the tough course we had to ride!); 24.29 miles; 1,715 cal; 18.1 average speed; 171 average HR (189 max); 42.2 max speed

50:15 total run time; 6.15 miles; 748 cal; 8:12 average pace; 176 average HR (190 max); 4:54 best pace
Miles 1 and 2: 15:30; 7:44 pace
To the turnaround (at the top of the massive hill): 8:28, 9:20 pace
To mile 4 (1.05 mi): 8:47; 8:22 pace
To mile 5: 8:28; 8:23 pace
To finish: 8:42; 7:56 pace

If it's not evident by the paces, the first 2 miles were downhill and the last 2 miles were the "back" of the out and back. Hence the slower pace. Still, I probably should have been going slightly faster overall. After all, it was only a 6-mile run.

Anthracite (PA) Olympic Triathlon
7-19-09; 2:43:26; 2 of 7 (AG); 9 of 40 (females); 61 of 154 (OA)

After the race and awards, we did a little touring around Jim Thorpe, PA. It's like Gatlinburg–it's nice to go there once, but once is about enough unless you'll be hiking or rafting or camping.

Robin lifting Jason...it's pretty obvious which one is stronger!
